Sentier du Dormoir de Lantara

A quiet forest loop named for the painter Simon Lantara, said to have slept beneath its sandstone rocks. 1.9km, easy.

Follow in the footsteps of Millet, Rousseau, Corot, and the painters who made Barbizon famous. This 7.4km loop begins at the village and winds into the forest edge, passing the clearings and rock outcrops that inspired a generation of artists.

Circuit des Peintres de Barbizon

A slow walk the full length of Grande Rue, Barbizon's single main street. Ceramic mosaics set into the walls reproduce the paintings made here — Millet's peasants, Rousseau's oaks, Corot's clearings. The whole village in under a kilometre.

Parcours des Mosaïques

A forest walk through the Brigands country — named for the Caverne des Brigands, a sandstone overhang that sheltered outlaws and later became a favourite subject for Barbizon painters. This 2km loop passes rocky outcrops and tall pines on the forest edge.

Sentier de la Cavalière des Brigands

The forest loop that made Barbizon famous. Starting from the village edge, this 1.9km walk follows the path the painters took daily into the Gorges d'Apremont, passing the Elephant — a natural sandstone formation whose silhouette Rousseau and Millet knew by heart.

Sentier des Peintres — L'Éléphant

Named for Simon Mathurin Lantara, the 18th-century painter said to have slept beneath its rocks, this 1.9km loop ventures into the quieter southern forest. Less visited than the Elephant, it offers solitude among sandstone outcrops and open heathland.
