Hôtel Les Pléiades

Daubigny's former studio, now a celebrated 4-star hotel-spa. Currently closed for major renovation works.

Description

Originally the studio of painter Charles-François Daubigny from around 1835, this address became one of Barbizon's most celebrated hotels. Daubigny left Barbizon in 1865 for Auvers-sur-Oise, where he later became a neighbour and crucial supporter of Van Gogh. The studio was expanded over time and became a renowned hotel and restaurant. Its guest book includes Corot, Mistinguett, Sacha Guitry and Wallis Windsor. The hotel is currently closed for extensive renovation works expected to last approximately two years.

Historical context

Daubigny left Barbizon for Auvers-sur-Oise in 1865. A few years later, a young Dutch painter named Vincent van Gogh arrived in the same village. Daubigny recognised something in him immediately and became one of his most vocal defenders — writing to the dealer Theo van Gogh to encourage him to support his brother. The chain of artistic generosity that ran through Barbizon reached all the way to the most famous painter of the following century.
