Description
Historical context
Barye drew the animals of the Jardin des Plantes with Delacroix. He sculpted the lions at the gates of the Louvre, the Napoleon of Ajaccio, the allegorical figures of the Sully pavilion. He was rejected by the Salon, then elected to the Academy. His whole life was made of oscillations between official recognition and marginality. At Barbizon he found what Paris could not give him: the chance to observe animals in their natural habitat, not in a cage. The forest of Fontainebleau, with its deer and wild boar, provided living models that no zoological garden could match. His Barbizon watercolours are among the least known and most beautiful works of the School.
